Burroughs’ work is depressing and somewhat disturbing but I think
it does serve a purpose, even the pedophilia. The sharp contrast of the
openness of the character’s desire for the young boys and their maleness throws
the readers for a loop. This question of morality that is suddenly presented to
the readers on a silver platter forces the idea of desires without morals to
the forefront of the piece. When a
person thinks of what they really want, their morals play a part in that. But
for Burroughs, he uses the pedophilia to push the reader into confronting what
the term “without qualms” really means.
